On September 14, a devastating flash flood tore through Hildale, Utah. The floods carried away two vehicles with 3 mothers and their combined 13 children inside. All 3 mothers were killed along with 9 of their children. 3 of the children survived the ordeal and a fourth, 6 year old Tyson Black, is still missing and is presumed dead.
Many groups came together to assist in the search for young Tyson as well as the cleanup from the devastation. A large number of volunteers from the DCCS traveled to the town to assist along side FLDS members and residents of the town who are former members. Additionally, members of the Utah National Guard helped in the search. Governor Herbert approved aid to assist in the recovery and spoke at the victims' memorial later in the week.
