[Op-Ed] Utah's Rocky Relationship with Polygamy

On Saturday, Governor Herbert signed SB 102 into law reducing the crime of bigamy among consenting adults to an infraction. The bill made its way through the Legislature passing through the Senate, House and accompanying committees with only 3 nay votes overall.

Governor Herbert announced a 'soft closure' of all 41 public school districts and 116 charter schools for the next 2 weeks. Part of this time period coincides with regularly scheduled spring break, which the closure does not impact.

Coronavirus Updates: University of Utah moves most classes online; Utah's 4th case reported; President Trump restricts travel from Europe

The University of Utah announced earlier today they will be moving most classes to an online format to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Additional cases of COVID-19 in Utah were reported. President Trump has taken steps to suspend travel from most of Europe to the United States for the next 30 days.

Bigamy bill SB102 Passes the House 70-3

SB102 amending Utah's bigamy statute was passed 70-3 in the state House of Representatives. The bill now goes back to the Senate for a final vote before going to the Governor's desk for final approval.

We support Senator Henderson in her efforts and we support SB 102. While we believe SB 102 does not go far enough in removing unfair and unconstitutional enhancements, it offers a marginal improvement to the status quo for plural families.
