On Wednesday, Judge Laura Scott granted a request to issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) by Vanguard Academy against the State Charter School Board’s (SCSB) decision to remove all 9 members of Vanguard’s board. The SCSB’s decision was based primarily on membership or affiliation with the DCCS.

On Friday, September 2, alumni and students of Vanguard Academy in West Valley, organized a student rally in response to the SCSB’s vote to remove all 9 of Vanguard’s board members due to their affiliation with the DCCS. At its peak, the rally was attended by as many as 1,700 people.
A lawsuit was filed August 30 on behalf of Vanguard Academy Charter school and each of Vanguard’s board members. The complaint asks the court to review and reverse the decision made by the Utah State Charter School Board (SCSB) on August 22 to remove all 9 Vanguard board members.
At the SCSB meeting on August 22, 2022, the Governor appointed charter board made good on a threat made to Vanguard Academy charter school on May 12th, 2022 by then UCSB chair DeLaina Tonks to force them to "take their medicine"
